Every car needs some sort of protection and while many factory built cars don’t have car alarms installed by default, you will find that you can purchase some third party ones that will do just as good of a job.

If you’re in the market to purchase a car alarm system, there are a few things that you should look into before you make a purchase.  Yes, they will be a good investment, but if you invest in one that isn’t going to work for your vehicle, you might as well throw your money out the window.

Talking alarm vs. traditional

The first thing that you want to consider is if you want to get a talking alarm (which seem to popular) or a traditional alarm.  These alarms are the ones that just make loud noise and make your horn go off.  Now, the reason people tend to like talking alarms is because it draws a lot more attention than your regular ones.

Make sure it fits your model

There are a lot of alarms out there that are “universal.”  This simply means that they are going to work with any car out there.  Make sure that you get an alarm that works for you.  If you’re going to purchase it online, you may want to read reviews to see if it’s easy to install.  Even if you can’t install it, you can always get a professional to install it for you.

The features

  • The remote – Most alarms today have a remote.  This makes it easy for you to turn it on and off.  Your cheap ones though may have to be activated another way.
  • Engine kill – I love this feature as if the alarm goes off, it will automatically kill the engine until you disarm the alarm.
  • Misc features – Some car alarms will allow you to find your car with a  panic button, open your trunk, and even lock and unlock your car, making it a great 3 in 1 package.

Warranties

The last thing that I would look into is the warranties.  You will want to find one that will protect you for at least a year.  This way, if you find that your alarm doesn’t work, or you’re just not satisfied, you can either trade it in for a new one, or consider replacing one if yours breaks early.  Checking on the Internet for reviews can get your on the right path as well to which one will work for you.

Brands that you should consider:

  • Python
  • Bulldog
